Background

Hades, originally named Aidoneus by Rhea, is the oldest brother to Zeus and Poseidon and a member of the Six Traitors Dynasty. He is the King of the Underworld and God of the Dead. He is the CEO of Underworld Corp and the wealthiest character in the comic. When he was given the role of ruler of the Underworld, he focused all of his time and energy building it into the thriving realm it is now.

Because of his role in the underworld, he is not a very popular god and most Olympians and mortals are either afraid of him or avoid him. His reputation for being terrifying is not entirely without merit as he is willing to punish those who transgress against those close to him or his realm. Despite this, he is not an excellent advocate for himself and allows his friends and family to walk over him in personal matters.

It is revealed that Hades has always wanted to be married and have his own family, however he is sterile and has struggled to form lasting relationships with women due to his role and domain. Due to his heavy work schedule, Hades began a relationship of convenience with his personal assistant, Minthe. Overtime, their relationship became troubled and because of their proximity, they frequently got back together after breaking up. It is eventually revealed that their relationship was toxic as Minthe was emotionally and physically abusive to Hades. She played on his insecurities to control their relationship and make him buy her expensive gifts.

Appearance

Hades is blue like the color of the Underworld. He has a strong jaw and the shame sharp nose as Zeus and their father Kronos. He is very tall, the tallest of his brothers, and has broad shoulders. He is very fit from his love of swimming and running to work with Cerberus. His hair is usually styled back but when he becomes emotional, his hair starts to flip out. This happens usually around his thoughts of Persephone. When he is angry, he gets a cosmic tone to his skin and hair that makes him look like his father Kronos, which is a major insecurity of his.

Although he is 2,000 years old, he stopped aging in his late 30’s or early 40’s. He normally wears business attire, full suit and tie, for work or going out. He may dress more casually around the house, or when he’s working out. He is sensitive about how he looks older as Alecto jokes that he looks like Persephone’s “dusty ass dad” in the tabloid photo.

Family

Hades’ parents are Kronos and Rhea. He is the eldest among his siblings, Zeus and Poseidon.

He is very giving to his family and is the favorite uncle for Zeus’ kids, Ares, Hebe and Athena.

Family brunch between the three brother kings is a mandatory weekly tradition.

Relationships

Hera

Hera and Hades had a former fling, which they both agreed to stop doing “back in the 80’s.” It is implied that whenever Zeus cheats, Hera tries to get back at him by sleeping with Hades. Prior to Hades being assigned to the Underworld, a young Hera and Hades had a relationship. This was halted due to Zeus being interested in Hera.

Minthe

Minthe and Hades had a complicated, toxic and abusive relationship. According to Eros, they were “the ultimate on/off again dumpster fire.”

Minthe was hired as Hades’ personal assistant. It is likely that the long work hours and social stigma made Hades lonely and he began a non-committed relationship with Minthe. Over time, their personal relationship became toxic. While Minthe is said to be good at her job, it bled into the public and professional realm, letting Hades’ family and coworkers know that there are issues between the couple. This partly forms the basis for Hades’ major character arc of dealing with his loneliness and trauma in healthier ways, as well as processing his feelings and previously neglected hopes for the future.

Hecate

Hecate is a good friend to Hades. She seems to encourage Hades into fostering friendships with beings, such as Persephone.

Persephone

Hades sees Persephone across the ballroom and is overwhelmed by her beauty, making the mistake of saying she puts Aphrodite to shame. This sparks the seemingly unlikely friendship and ultimate romance between the god of the dead and the goddess of spring. They have a strong connection immediately and they both find it easy to open up to one another, asking personal questions and seeking each other out for comfort. Persephone is one of the only beings who are not ashamed to be seen with Hades in public or judges him too harshly. She doesn’t understand the stigma against him and Hades allows her to see the softer, kinder side of himself that he usually keeps protected. As of Season 2, they are seen flirting and hanging out together in the Underworld. Hades asked her to go on a date with him after Persephone’s trial.
