Athena’s Notebook

In here, we explore the series and ideas that inspired Rachel Smythe, from mythic deconstruction, to symbolism, to topics and themes tackled in some of the episodes.

“Of Pallas Athena, guardian of the city, I begin to sing. Dread is she, and with Ares she loves the deeds of war, the sack of cities and the shouting and the battle. It is she who saves the people as they go to war and come back. Hail, goddess, and give us good fortune and happiness!”

Homeric Hymn 11 to Athena (Greek epic C7th to 4th B.C.)

Character Analysis

Themes & Topics in Lore Olympus

LORE OLYMPUS COVERS A RANGE OF THEMES AND TOPICS - TRAUMA, IDENTITY, PARENTAL EXPECTATIONS, GASLIGHTING, DOMESTIC ABUSE, AND MORE.

trauma

True to life, every character has a story—and not all of them are pretty. Lore Olympus frequently deals with serious subjects, difficult situations, and the recovery and growth beyond such trauma.

reputation

Reputation was very important to Ancient Greek culture, and as such holds equal importance in the world of Lore Olympus. How others see them affects many of the decisions the characters make throughout the webcomic.

justice

Justice can be hard to find, and when meted out, has controversial results. Different characters have different values when it comes to carrying out justice and how to do so appropriately.

identity

So many of these characters are defined by what others think or expect of them, Persephone and Hades being prime examples. These individuals are finding themselves, whether or not they end up being the person everyone expects them to be.

classicism & racism

Many readers have been able to parse out the undertones of these prejudices in Lore Olympus. Things such as the nymphs’ low social status, Persephone’s insecurity about not coming from a big city, and more all reflect how classism and racism operates in the real world.

toxic masculinity

You see it in culture everywhere, from media to your own family. Toxic masculinity has ancient roots, and this shows in characters such as Zeus and Apollo.

sexuality

Accepting her sexuality as a woman is seen to be one of Persephone’s main hurdles to overcome on her way to adulthood. The Goddesses of Eternal Maidenhood (TGOEM) especially complicates that.

abuse

Just as Lore Olympus does not shy away from difficult topics such as trauma, it also does not shy away from a more specific aspect of some characters’ trauma: abuse. We see Hades in particular go on a journey through leaving behind the abusive relationship with Minthe and advocating for himself.
