Background

At the start of the comic, Persephone is only 19 years old. As she is of marriageable age, her mother Demeter, encourages her to join TGOEM. Demeter is very protective of her daughter and has tried to shelter her in the mortal realm away from Zeus’ influence. Persephone is intelligent, enjoys school, but is also very secretive and strong-willed.

Persephone works long hours in the mortal realm to help her mother grow crops. She is very close with the flower nymphs she works with but notes that she is ready to be her own person and finds their company stifling. She is adventurous and is jealous of the freedom that Artemis has in being independent and on her own.

Persephone is emotionally intelligent and communicates her feelings very well when she is ready to share them. When given opportunities to be unkind or cruel, Persephone chooses to be fair and forgiving, this eventually may be a trait that she will have to override in order to protect herself from those that wish her harm.

Appearance

Persephone is pink in full color: from her hair to her skin and eyes. She is able to grow her hair on command but seems to prefer to either keep her hair up or cut short. Flowers tend to grow in a crown around her head to reflect her emotional state. Thorns would appear when she feels rage.

Persephone is small compared to other beings. Because of her color, she is often mistaken as a flower nymph.

She is usually dressed in white, a creative choice that ensures she always looks bridal when next to Hades who is usually in black. Recently, Persephone has turned to shades of green for her clothing choice.

Family

Persephone is the only daughter of Demeter.

In Greek Myth, her father was Zeus. However, in Lore Olympus, she was solely created by Demeter and has no father. Persephone also mentioned she has a brother who is a horse and refers to the flower nymphs she created as her sisters.

Relationships

Artemis

Artemis is Persephone’s roommate and best friend. It was Artemis who defended Persephone from her mother, Demeter, when she claimed that she wanted to move to Olympus. Artemis seems to care for Persephone a lot, and tries her best to look out for her.

Persephone respects Artemis and doesn’t want to drag her into her conflict with Apollo.

Apollo

Apollo is the twin brother of Artemis, Persephone’s roommate. Persephone doesn’t initially like Apollo and is extremely uncomfortable around him due to his overwhelming personality. Yet she was willing to think of him in friendly terms. Apollo proves himself to be undeserving of her friendship and trust by assaulting her. Persephone rightfully hates and is afraid of Apollo to the point of declaring war, forming the basis of one of the major plots in Lore Olympus.

Hermes

Before Persephone moved to Olympus, she and Hermes were already friends as Demeter would often send her letters. Though unconfirmed, it is speculated that Hermes may have a slight “crush” on Persephone. He practiced his way of asking her to come to work with him and was thrilled to see her when she moved to Olympus.

On the day of her birthday, Hermes happily greets her and ties a lot of balloons on her wrist. It was also implied that it was him who told Eros about her birthday.

Ares

Ares was Persephone’s first kiss. They met in the Mortal Realm and Ares spent a week with her, pretending he couldn’t read, to get closer to her. They met again in the Underworld wherein Ares told Persephone he could sense her anger all the way from the Mortal Realm.

Eros

Eros met Persephone during the Panathenea, when his mother asked him to prank Hades and put her in his car. He was reluctant to do the prank and later went to Artemis’ house with donuts to apologize. Eros also took Persephone on a makeover and shopping spree. Eventually, Eros and Persephone became good friends.

Eros is somewhat of a brotherly figure towards Persephone. It is evident that he cares for Persephone a lot, and would give her great advice such as encouraging her to take care of her mental health and well-being. It is Eros who consoles her when she is sad about Hades and Minthe. It is also Eros who takes care of her after finding out what Apollo did. He even threatened Apollo during his confrontation with Persephone. Eros is often there for her at times of emotional distress and is able to provide comfort and care for her when she needs it.

Daphne

As a flower nymph, Daphne also grew up from the Mortal Realm and was implied to have a close friendship with Persephone. Persephone was shown to be protective of her, especially upon seeing her on a date with Apollo. Daphne also defended Persephone when Thanatos complained about her.

hecate

Hecate and Persephone became friends when Hecate stayed over with them during her time in the Mortal Realm. She is protective of Persephone and was concerned when she thought that Hades has used her for casual sex. The first time they met again in the Underworld, she and Persephone shared a big hug after missing each other.

Hecate expresses full confidence in Persephone’s abilities at work. She seems to respect Persephone’s capabilities and sees much potential in her.

Hades

Hades smells like a forest fire in winter and Persephone is drawn to him from the beginning. He is the one character in Lore Olympus that treats Persephone with respect and sees her as an adult. As their friendship grows, he learns to communicate his thoughts and feelings with her and begins to see the pressure she is under. Persephone flirts with Hades and was crushed when she learns he is in a relationship. Giving into her insecurities and thinking her feelings cannot be returned, Persephone communicates her need for boundaries with Hades to protect their friendship and working relationship. It is clear that Hades doesn’t fully understand her request, but he does his best to respect her wishes. After his relationship with Minthe ended, Persephone was able to turn to Hades for help and comfort without guilt. While there are still obstacles in their way in pursuing a proper relationship, Hades assured Persephone that they are in no rush and that perhaps, after her trial, they can go on a proper date.

Trivia & Commentary

from lo canon / observation

from mythology

  • Persephone translates to “destroy/slay.” In Greek, Pertho means “destroy” and phone means “murder.” Her Roman name, Proserpina was derived from proserpere, meaning “to shoot forth.”

  • She was the daughter of Zeus and Demeter in Mythology. In some myths, she was the infernal goddess of death, a daughter of Zeus and Styx.

  • Homer doesn’t mention her abduction story. She was simply described as Hades’ wife and queen. It was Hesiod who first mentioned the tale of her abduction. Hades asked Zeus, Kore’s father, for permission to marry her and carried her off at the advise of Zeus, for Demeter surely won’t allow her daughter to go with Hades.

  • In the Orphics hymn, she is described as the “all-pervading goddess of nature”, who is capable of producing and destroying everything.
