Demeter

Demeter

Goddess of the Harvest

Nickname: Unknown

Age: 2000+ / Physically in 30’s

Location: Mortal Realm

Background

Demeter, goddess of harvest, is one of the Six Traitors Dynasty and helped Zeus overthrow the Titans. She has a strained relationship with the other traitors as she doesn’t agree with Zeus’ leadership. Demeter is one of the few gods willing to tell Zeus “no” and decided to raise Persephone away from Olympus to protect her from Zeus. She also has an argumentative attitude with Hades, which is a reason he did not want to pursue a romantic relationship with her after the war.

Demeter is a powerful businesswoman and takes her role in the mortal realm very seriously. Her Barley Mother empire is very profitable and has made her into a very wealthy woman. She is very organized and precise and when Persephone takes over the role of creating Spring, there is a big difference in execution as Persephone takes a more chaotic and natural approach.

She is very protective of her daughter and the nymphs that work with her. She is overbearing, and Artemis calls her a “Helicopter” but she’s very loving and they clearly have an affectionate mother/daughter relationship. Demeter makes decisions to protect Persephone. She does not have a favorable opinion about men, perhaps due to her experience with Zeus, and encourages Persephone to make an oath to join The Goddesses of Eternal Maidenhood (TGOEM) to be a sacred virgin for eternity starting when she was 14 years old.

Initially, it was perceived that she was a “helicopter mom” towards Persephone. However, Persephone has shown fondness for her mother and has drawn strength from her mother’s example to help her through an uncertain situation. Demeter seems respected by the nymphs in her realm. When she tried to apologize to the nymphs for Zeus’ destroying their fields, they told her not to apologize for standing up to a bully.

Appearance

Demeter is one of the few characters that has duotone coloring. Her skin tone is an earthy green color and her hair is purple and usually in an elegant updo with gold barley accessories. We see her mostly in mortal dresses that expose the scars on her back. While on Olympus, she wears conservative pantsuits of different colors and looks like the powerful businesswoman she is.

Family

Metis is a mother figure to Demeter. Though they were not related by blood, Demeter was raised to treat Hestia and Hera as sisters.

Persephone is her known child. She loves her daughter very much and is fiercely overprotective of her to a fault. It is later revealed that Demeter is afraid for her daughter, which she attributes to her theory about fertility goddesses. When Persephone committed an act of wrath, she tried her best to protect her daughter by bribing Hermes and attempting to do the same with Helios.

Relationships

Hestia

As daughters of Metis, Demeter and Hestia appear to be friendly with each other. They are both ecstatic about Kore being inducted into TGOEM.

Hera

Hera and Demeter were once very good friends, but due to unknown circumstances, have drifted apart over the years. This is possibly because Demeter has covered up Zeus’ affairs in the past. Demeter doesn’t know that Hera had Persephone work as an Intern in the Underworld.

Zeus

Demeter dislikes Zeus and is wary of him. She asked her nymphs to stay inside the house when he asked Demeter to once again hide a nymph for him. Demeter refused and asked him to stop cheating on his wife. Zeus, in return, destroyed her crops and fields.

From then on, Demeter ran her business in the Mortal Realm. She raised her daughter, Persephone, in the Mortal Realm because according to Zeus, she doesn’t like the way Zeus runs things and that he’s “morally corrupt.”

Hecate

When Demeter went into hiding, the third being of choice (the firsts were Hestia and Hera) she went to was Hecate. It is implied that there is a strong level of friendship and trust between them, as Hecate stayed with Demeter when she studied poisonous plants in the Mortal Realm. Demeter also confided in Hecate her theory about fertility goddesses and how she thinks her daughter is in danger.
