Hades flies to Persephone’s tree.

When he places his hands on it, shoots sprout out and elongate, leading him to a car junkyard.

He rips the top off a car, finding Persephone huddled in the fetal position, asleep, with countless roots growing out of her back.

Her hair transformed to leaves and her skin is an icy blue color in spots.

She won’t wake up. When Hades rips the vines to release her, golden ichor drips from the edges of the plant.

“Don’t worry. You’re safe now.”

Hades

Hades carries her to his home, where Hecate and two grey-blue cleanup crew nymphs wait to assist.

Because she’s cold and her body is exhausted from using her powers on the tree, they take her to his pool. Hecate enters and performs what appears to be some magic, perhaps to warm the water.

In the water, Hecate tries to wake her, warning otherwise she may enter hibernation which could take years.

Hades says “No!” and leans over her, begging her to wake up, asking her to go to Sicily with him and introduce him to her favorite places, to help him remember his home.

As he holds her, the blue starts to seep away, she hugs him and opens her eyes. They are glowing in pale blue.

Note: We try to eschew analysis in recaps, but the symbolism and emotion in this chapter is very strong, and the music accompaniment incredibly moving. To learn more about the artist who made the music for this chapter, check out our interview with Tahni here.
