Week 4: Episodes 49-65

This week, we’re reading through EPISODES 49 - 65. In these episodes, Persephone begins her internship in the Underworld and gains new skills (while Minthe plots to bring Persephone down). Meanwhile, Hera tries to figure out who hurt Persephone, and Eros learns what Apollo did. We’re introduced to new locations during the tour of the Underworld, and we get insight into the Goddesses of Eternal Maidenhood and Persephone’s friendship with Artemis. Plus, Hermes is covering something up! And someone loses an eye!

Week 4 Discussion Questions

  • Do you think it’s fair for Hades to punish Alex for invading his privacy, as well as Persephone’s?

  • If Persephone told Artemis about Apollo, do you think she would have believed her? Do you think Artemis sees red flags with Apollo?

  • Do you think Persephone was aware of the sexual implications of swimming naked with Hermes and changing in front of him?

  • What is it about Persephone that makes people assume she is a fertility goddess? Why do you think Persephone seems ashamed at the thought of being one?

  • Persephone engages Hades in a discussion about communication in “Whiplash.” Do you think Hades is used to solving issues by talking about them?

Trivia

  • When Persephone is jealous, deadly nightshade grows in her hair.

  • Hecate’s credit card is called a Painite card. Painite, a dark red borat-type gem, is one of the rarest gemstones in the world.

  • Persephone accepts a Pomegranate drink from Hades. In original mythology, Persephone eats a pomegranate and is tied to the Underworld.

  • Artemis and Apollo have a portrait together in her house, wearing matching shirts. They are twins—Artemis is the older twin, and Apollo the younger.

  • Hecate refers to Thanatos and Minthe as “the brats.”

  • Thanatos assumes that Persephone is unintelligent just because she’s from the Mortal Realm.

  • Hera’s visions aren’t always correct, but are most of the time.

  • Hades’ reaction to Persephone pointing out that he acted like he didn’t want to know her that morning was to give her a lavish gift (a new cell phone that’s not yet on the market).

  • Snarky Chat was started 8 months prior to the beginning of the story.

  • Artemis can turn into a doe.

  • Demeter has a cell phone in the Mortal Realm.

Easter Eggs

  • Hermes is checking out Persephone’s butt as she leads him into the house before getting ready to go to work with him. (Episode 50)

  • Artemis has Apollo in her phone as “Dumb Brother.”

  • Hades is wearing earrings with his crown.

  • The panel in episode 53, where Hades is screaming internally, is a nod to a famous meme.

  • Persephone’s business card includes several alternative names, including Proserpina and Kore.

  • Demeter is wearing the same brooch Persephone had on her coat in Tartarus.

  • The mortal clothing rental lady is watching a makeup tutorial.

Important Points and Episode References

  • Hades is delighted by Persephone getting angry and showing wrath. Does this mean he won’t be upset when he learns about Persephone’s act of wrath?

  • When Persephone says that she fudged the truth a little bit when saying she knew how to drive a car, she told Hades, “I guess that makes us even.” This is referring to when they were talking on the phone, and Hades told her he wasn’t seeing anyone, as Persephone just witnessed Hades and Minthe kiss.

  • Persephone tells Thanatos he can’t have any baklava, calling him “Lazy Bones.” This is in reference to a previous episode, when Thanatos cuts in front of her at the train station, and she shouts after him that he is a “lazy bones” because he has wings and yet is taking the train.

  • Persephone thinks it’s “terrible” that Hades makes shades wait on the Beach for 100 years if they don’t have the money to pay the ferryman. In a later episode, Persephone sneaks onto the Beach to hand out coins to shades.

  • Demeter won’t let Persephone visit the forests past the mountains alone in episode 62, telling her that she knows exactly why it’s not a good idea. We later learn hat Persephone lost her alone-time privileges after running into Ares in the forest.

  • Hermes has had Persephone’s baklava before (he says she’s “outdone herself”).

  • The flash of the camera in episode 54 triggers Persephone, and takes her back to the moment of her assault when Apollo took pictures of her.

  • It’s revealed that Hera disguised herself as the reporter who took the pictures of Hades and Persephone in the Underworld. This is the second time we have seen Hera shape-shift.
