Episode 34: Mind the Gap

Editors: Bekah Caden and Annie LaHue
Released: 21 October 2018

Hades stares at the tabloid, the words Aphrodite said about showing Persephone the best of him echoing in his head. His anger rises as he realizes he should have been looking out for her. He furiously crushes the tabloid, wondering who wrote such things, when he notices Hecate staring him down. He asks what’s wrong, so he grabs him by his tie and angrily asks if that was Persephone exiting his home. Shirt and crown askew, Hades answers “maybe” and tries to give an innocent smile.

“Nameless flower nymph!? Who wrote this tripe?”

Hecate responds by slapping him across the face while yelling about how disappointed she is in him. Hades confusedly stares at Hecate who is crying in rage. She then tells him that Persephone is only 19. He shouts in surprise, causing birds to fly away from the building.

Hades thinks back to his previous conversations with Persephone and realizes that he is an idiot since all the signs were there. He then desperately asks Hecate if she means 1919, but she insists she means born nineteen years ago. Hades, shocked and ashamed, falls to the floor and asks for all his meetings to be canceled. At this point Hecate realizes that he really did not know that Persephone was that young.

Hecate carries Hades to the couch, where he tells her not to look at him like a creepy old man. He explains that nothing happened, she slept in the guest room and he drove her home in the morning. Hecate then bonks him on the head, prompting Hades to ask her to stop hitting him. She reprimands him for not being discrete. She explains that this doesn’t have the same impact for him as it does for Persephone and that it could put Persephone’s scholarship at this.

Upon hearing about Persephone’s scholarship, Hades excitedly realizes that Hecate knows her.

Hecate explains that she and Persephone became friends last year when she was studying poisonous plants in the mortal realm, and that she and Persephone have been exchanging letters ever since. Hades giddily asks if he could read some of the letters, and Hecate yells at him to pull himself together and to stop being a creep. He says fine, but asks if Persephone has nice handwriting. He is extremely happy to learn that Persephone has flawless penmanship and excellent spelling and grammar.

Meanwhile, Persephone is on campus, and texts Hades that she is nervous for her first day of class. She receives a text from Apollo and panics, shutting her phone off entirely. As Persephone continues to walk to class, she doesn’t notice the students behind her holding a copy of the tabloid, wondering if she is the one in the photo.
