The Broke One’s Guide to Self Care

How to Treat Yourself on a Low Budget

Let’s be honest — not all of us have the extra resources to splurge on a lavish spa experience. But self-care isn’t about being able to afford hundreds of dollars worth of treatments on yourself. Sometimes, all we need are our little happy things. So chin up, dearest one. Here are some ways on how to pamper yourself at the comforts of your own home.

Set the mood for your soothing night with scented candles.

Light your favorite scented candles and place them all around your room for a tranquil experience.

Don’t have any at hand? Sometimes I use those $2 pack of tea lights and sprinkle some ground cinnamon.

If candles are not your thing, grab the remote or your laptop and put on Netflix.

Binge watch your favorite series — preferably one that always gives you comfort when you’re down. Is it a light, romantic show, a silly teen series, or a classic comedy? Watch something that makes you swoon or laugh your socks off.

Brew a cup of tea!

The warmth of the tea will help you relax your nerves. On top of that, tea has health benefits and according to witches, some magical properties. Brew your favorite or choose a brand of tea that suits your needs. And for that extra flavor, add some cinnamon or honey.

Green has cleansing properties. Chamomile and lavender are good for insomnia and anxiety. Black tea is great for focusing. Chai tea is good for digestion.

Put on your favorite sheet mask — or better yet, make it yourself!

Mash some bananas and add some honey. Put on for 10 minutes or as long as you want! My honest go-to for DIY face mask: oatmeal and honey.

NOTE: Make sure to do a patch test first on your skin before putting these ingredients on your face to see if you’re allergic.

Whip up a DIY scrub

Your dry elbows and knees need extra attention.

Add some essential oil to raw sugar and voila! You have your very own exfoliating scrub.

Sing your heart out! No, really.

Play all of your favorite songs and sing along. Dance around with your pet or grab that hair brush and pretend you’re throwing an encore in a sold out concert. Why not? Life is too short.
