Theory: Persephone, the Bringer of Death (Closed!)
By Cara
Now that the first season is over, let the theories come rolling in! There have been a lot of discussions about how Persephone’s “Act of Wrath” must’ve taken place and what consequences would come after. That being said, we gathered the most acknowledged theories across the fandom.
Feel free to add your theories and share your thoughts below!
The Snarky Trio is an unreliable source
Let’s face it — can we really trust anything that comes out of the Scooby gang? I mean, they don’t exactly have a trustworthy reputation.
The last panel seemed quite out of character for our Persephone, even in her rage, that her screaming maniacally with a Christmas tree of mortals is almost comical. While there may have been events that are somehow true, we still think there is a possibility that the narrations of said events are twisted and exaggerated.
Case in point: Persephone’s red vines in her hair, a characteristic that we are all too familiar of once confronted with her rage, are missing from the panel.
THIS THEORY IS:
In Episode 132, we saw the events of the Act of Wrath from Persephone’s perspective which were less dramatic and less mortal Christmas tree-y than the Snarky Trio’s version.
2. Zeus might know about Persephone’s Act of Wrath.
Some people have pointed out that in some Myths, Zeus was the one behind Persephone’s name change. Since the mortals are behind Persephone’s name change, could it be that Zeus is also part of the cover-up?
Here’s the thing, during Eros’ act of wrath, we saw that Zeus has cameras (literally) all over the mortal realm. It seems unlikely that a major name change of one of the goddesses under his domain would go unnoticed. It’s also unlikely that a giant tree with mortals coming out of nowhere would go unnoticed in one of his cameras.
Also, why wasn’t there an alarm in the Underworld about it?
Furthermore, we know that Demeter has hidden mistresses for him before. What if Demeter asked him this time, pulled out receipts, in order to further protect her daughter and hide the massive influx of souls from Hades?
Not going to lie, the idea of an unlikely cover-up partnership between Demeter and Zeus is kind of intriguing.
THIS THEORY IS:
Turns out Zeus doesn’t really know anything. Like Jon Snow. He knows nothing.
3. Hecate might be part of the cover-up.
Let’s talk about the timeline.
Upon seeing the Fates tape, we know that the act of wrath happened prior to Hades meeting Persephone for the first time. However, this was when Hecate was staying with them for months, studying poisonous plants.
It seems unlikely that Hecate doesn’t know anything.
Hecate is a prominent figure in the myths involving Demeter and Persephone. It is Hecate who helped Demeter find her daughter and it is Hecate who served as Persephone’s protector while she stays in the Underworld. If we’re assuming that Persephone’s act of wrath happened before drunk Hades stumbled upon the Mortal Realm, we can assume that Hecate was there when it happened. We can also assume that apart from Hades’ visit, this could be why Hecate’s visit was immediately cut short.
Plus, Hecate knowing what happened would also make it easier for Demeter to hide it all from Hades. If Hermes butchered up the soul count, what if Hecate did something which is why there are no records of anything?
THIS THEORY IS:
This is a bit more complicated. While we were right that Hecate does know about the Act of Wrath, we have no implications that she is part of the cover-up. She simply knew about Persephone.
4. A case of blind rage
We know that Rachel is a fan of Carrie and Black Swan, and with the Carrie parallels set up from the beginning, it could also be that Persephone simply snapped once she saw her sisters die.
Some people also raised the point that perhaps Persephone’s guilt comes from the fact that she enjoyed her wrath, thus, she plants with her hands to gain sympathy and understand the mortals more. She clearly has had too much pent up feelings.
Bottom line is — we don’t know how much she was in control of herself when it was happening or whether she disassociated.
Some people also point out that in myths, Persephone is in fact, known to be more feared than Hades.
THIS THEORY IS:
As we found out, Persephone’s emotions got the best of her and she lost control of her powers, leading towards her unintentionally killing a lot of mortals.
With Persephone’s Act of Wrath now out in the open and her trial pending, we can now deem this case closed.
The last we saw Leto she mentioned paying a visit to the Underworld. What do you think she is up to in the Underworld?
