Artist Feature: Maria (Maddie)
How long have you done art? What mediums have you tried?
I've been drawing since I was a toddler, but I decided to take art more seriously and try to pursue it as a career when I was around 14. I've used many different types of mediums, from markers to watercolor to digital. Nowadays I mostly do digital art but every once in a while i'll try to do something with watercolors. Painting with an actual brush is really fun but it can also be a pain in the ass.
How would you describe your style?
Honestly, I have absolutely no idea of how I would describe my art style. Inconsistent maybe? Oversaturated? Fluid? I don't know. I guess my coloring is what makes my drawings shine. Makes them stand out. Some people have also told me that my art looks very effortless and expressive. Other than that, my posts are also very unique hehe.
Tell us your Lore Olympus story.
Picture this: it's July 2019, I was scrolling through pinterest like the scrub that I am looking for "aesthetic anime wallpapers" when I stumbled upon that "do i look like a scoundrel to you?" panel from LO for the 100th time that week. So, out of curiosity, I decided to google the thing to see what it was about and whatnot. I had no idea that LO was a popular comic. It looked like some underground indie thing and that aspect really sparked my interest. I downloaded the Webtoon app and read it in a single afternoon. I also reread it that same day but that's besides the point. I wasn't expecting the story to be so intriguing, but everything about LO caught me off guard and to say that I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement for sure. I keep coming back to it every week because I ended up growing attached to this little comic and its colorful cast of characters. What can I say? I'm a simple woman in the twilight of my life with simple standards. Don't @ me!
How has fan art changed your style or helped you grow?
Making LO fanart has helped me a lot with how I approach coloring and shading in general. Since most of the characters are one single shade, it's quite the challenge to figure out how to make them look nice while also making sure that the values are looking ok.
Which Lore Olympus fan art are you most proud of and why?
I have two: the panel redraw I made during the hiatus and my movie crossover piece from loretober. They are both very colorful and dynamic drawings and I'm really proud of how they turned out, especially the Addams Family one!
If you could body snatch one LO character for a day, who would it be?
I'd snatch bodies with Hebe so I can guilt trip Hades into redistributing his wealth with my spoiled niece powers. That depressed blue person has too much money.
Do you have any goals or aspirations for your fan art?
I'd like to one day feel confident enough in my skills to sell my art. I want money. It is what it is after all.
Any advice for someone looking to build their art skills?
Use references! Especially for anatomy that you are not familiar with. Trust me, they save lives.
Dont look at other artists as obstacles or as your competition. Look at them as a goal. One day you are going to reach the same level of skill as that really good artist you look up to and it's going to feel amazing.
Keep practicing and experiment with as many art styles and mediums as you can. There are also many online resources that can help you get a good grasp at how to approach your art.
Study other artists' works and try to incorporate aspects of their art that you find amusing into your own drawings. Like the way they color hair, how they draw feet, etc. Art is muscle memory after all.
With time you'll organically develop a style of your own, so don't pressure yourself on that regard, you scrubs.
Just for fun: Who did you get on this quiz?
I got Big John! She and I have very strong background character energy so the quiz was on point.
My name is Maria, but people online know me as Maddie. I'm an animation student from Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I love horror movies, especially the classic slasher. I live in a very nice place with my family and my dumb dog, Apollo. Lore Olympus is my confort comic and I have a really bad sense of humor. Follow Maria here:
