In many cultures, haircuts symbolize transformation. Hair is often associated as an extension of one’s soul and identity, therefore, the cutting of hair holds significant meaning to a lot of societies.

In Mulan, Mulan is seen cutting her hair with a sword. Many fans think this is symbolical to her shedding off her identity to take a new one. (In the film, Mulan takes an identity of a man to join the army).
