Cosplayer Feature: Amy
How long have you been doing cosplay?
I have been doing cosplay since late 2018. I've known about cosplay since I was a pre-teen obsessed with Sailor Moon and always wanted to do it, but I didn't have the guts nor skills/money to get into it. And I thought my friends would make fun of me if I did cosplay. Then I became an adult and realized I could do whatever the hell I wanted.
Who is your favorite Lore Olympus character to cosplay?
Definitely Hecate! I love almost every outfit she wears and her facial reactions are fun to recreate.
Tell us your Lore Olympus story.
I was furloughed (thanks pandemic) and felt like an utter failure. I had seen advertisements for the comic for a while and I was intrigued, but didn't have the time to sit down and read it. Now that I was suddenly handed a bunch of free time, I went and binged Lore Olympus in a little over a day. It was a comfort read during a rough time and updates were something to look forward to. The great story and the dedicated fandom has made me even more obsessed.
What is the most memorable cosplay?
Probably Pearl from Steven Universe! She was one of my first cosplays and I've even revamped her, so I've been able to gauge how much I've improved through this character. She was also my first foray into bodypainting which helped once I got into Lore Olympus.
What other fandoms are you in? What’s special about the Lore Olympus fandom?
I'm part of the Sailor Moon, Steven Universe, and Yūri on Ice fandoms! The Lore Olympus fandom has been very supportive and, in my experience, very helpful in sharing bodypaint advice!
If you could body snatch one LO character for a day, who would it be?
I would do anything to be Hecate.
What does cosplay mean to you?
Cosplay was originally my excuse to learn more "practical" skills. "No you see cosplay will be a good way to learn sewing and crafting!!!" as if I needed to justify myself in the first place. Surprisingly, cosplay has made me feel more assured of myself - skills and appearance-wise. The friends that I've made through this hobby are some of the most kind and supportive people I've ever met and the skills I've gained are insurmountable. I'm definitely happier now with myself than I was before cosplay.
Any advice for a new cosplayer out there?
This is advice I needed to hear when I first started cosplaying. Stop focusing so much on the errors in your cosplay because there's a high chance no one will notice. Stop comparing yourself to other cosplayers, especially ones who have been in the game for years. And your bodypaint might look bad to you midway through the process, but keep working through it because something as simple as putting on lipstick, lashes, or your wig can finally make everything click.
Just for fun: Who did you get on the Hades’ dog character quiz?
Big John!!
